Bidzina Ivanishvili: Breakthrough of the Year

2012-01-03 13:32

After dramatic dispersal of the opposition rally at Rustaveli Avenue on May 26 public and political life of Georgia has naturally fell into a deep sleep. The power has lucidly demonstrated that they're not going to tolerate a competition. And there were no signs of significant events in the political life of the Transcaucasian republic - at least until the elections. But the power's schedule was interrupted by a totally unexpected character - businessman and philanthropist Bidzina Ivanishvili. He has become a real discovery of the year in Georgian politics.

The political manifesto of Bidzina Ivanishvili resounded in early October. Georgia's public life, which began to stagnate in the background of the lack of new faces and fresh ideas, needed it. That was almost nice trick for the authorities. After all, after the May events systemic opposition was nearly in state of coma and could not be a worthy target for Saakashvili's propaganda machine. Trite anti-Russian slogans are not able to rally the public around the president and the government which is necessary in an election year. And here they've got a gift of fate! The billionaire has been properly funding various government projects for many years, and Mikhail Saakashvili and his entourage

had been properly attributing realization of these programs. And then suddenly, without apparent reason, October 5, Ivanishvili announced plans to create a political party to participate in parliamentary elections; and joined the opposition, weak after the events of the May at Rustaveli Avenue. It has immediately became clear that Ivanishvili's main purpose is the removal of Mikhail Saakashvili and his corrupt entourage from power.

"Mikhail Saakashvili's total monopolization of power and the adoption of constitutional changes, which show his obvious desire to preserve the power despite the expired term, determined my decision to create a political party and to participate in the parliamentary elections in 2012. Saakashvili can't get the main thing: the power and falsehood, which he uses to rule the country only exacerbates the plight of Georgia", the billionaire explained his motivation. "During the reign Saakashvili had made a lot of mistakes; and every sane politician would have resigned and would have asked for forgiveness from his people".
