Georgia’s fatal eggs2012-01-13 18:49
Georgia declares war on Kinder Surprises. Favorite children's sweets have attracted close attention of Georgian doctors who believe that the ban has serious reasons like obesity and diabetes as well as the risk for a child to swallow a toy inside an egg.
By now Kinder Surprise is banned only in one country - the United States of America. Under the federal act of 1938 (!) foodstuffs can't contain inedible objects. Import of chocolate eggs to the territory of the country is punished by penalties reaching USD 300. Despite all that, Kinder shipments continue to arrive in the States. Annually, border services seize thousands of chocolate eggs. According to 2010 statistics, 25 thousand eggs were found at the time of hand luggage checks and inside postal deliveries.
Europe too has been considering a ban on Kinder Surprise recently. In Germany, for instance, Bundestag commission for children's affairs views these eggs as potential danger. As Miriam Grus, a member of the commission, explains, children are unable to discern what can be eaten and what cannot, so combination of foodstuffs and toys might be dangerous for children's health. As a result, however, Kinders have not been banned in Germany yet.
Ferrero company (Italy) that produces these chocolates states that such claims are unjustified. Elize Glaab, a press secretary of Ferrero representative office in Germany remarks there has been no proof yet that combination of sweet things and toys increases danger for children, for a toy inside a Kinder Surprise is separated from the chocolate with a plastic capsule. "Security of this product has been reconfirmed by a series of expert tests in independent institutes, and combination of foodstuffs and inedibles is not prohibited by the EU Directive on Toy Security", - she also reminds.
With no regard to explanations above, this "fatal egg" seems to be a serious concern of Georgian doctors this year. Due to the efforts of local authorities, they do their best to be like America. According to Ketevan Nemsadze, a member of the Academy of Sciences. Kinder Surprise is harmful for children for a number of reasons. Firstly, chocolate contributes to obesity and diabetes among little children. Secondly, a child may swallow a toy inside an egg. As the Federation of Consumers' Rights Protection claims, soon Georgia will hold necessary research.
Still, is Kinder Surprise so harmful to be banned? GTimes correspondent asks Ekaterina Alexandrova, a nutritionist.
