Georgian Wine: Now in the EU

Long-suffering Georgian wine, banned in Russia, has finally found a market. The European Council has approved an agreement between EU and Georgia on mutual protection of geographical names, signed in July 2011. According to the document, the European Union recognizes the quality of Georgian products exported to the countries of the EU. The agreement is intended to help increase the trade turnover between the EU and Georgia, which reached 1 billion 700 million euros in 2010, according to the European Commission.

According to RIA.ru, the European Council has approved an agreement between EU and Georgia on mutual protection of geographical names, signed in July 2011. According to the document, the European Union recognizes the quality of Georgian products exported to the countries of the EU.

The agreement, in particular, provides the way for supplies of 18 items of Georgian wines, including such well-known wines as the "Khvanchkara", "Tsinandali", "Kindzmarauli", "Manavi", "Gurjaani" and "Akhasheni", to the EU.

In turn, about three thousand items of agricultural products may be exported from the EU to Georgia.

The agreement is intended to help increase the trade turnover between the EU and Georgia, which reached 1 billion 700 million euros in 2010, according to the European Commission.

Recently, Georgia reported that its wine exports have grown by 37.7%. According to VZGLIAD  in 2011, exports of Georgian wine amounted $ 54.1 million; in total Georgia exported to foreign markets 16.9 million liters of the drink.

The representative of the Association of Georgian wine, Aphazava George, said that Georgia's wine is sold in Ukraine best of all. There is no data for 2011, but in 2010, the country sold 6.3 million liters for $ 18 million. The second place was taken by Kazakhstan, buying 15% of the total volume of export of Georgian wines, the third - Belarus (10%).
