Military itching won’t do Georgia any good

2009-02-11 09:55

6/0/4/1604.jpegAccording to Russia's Defense Ministry report of February 4 top priority facilities of the 4th military base in Tskhinval are commissioned.

A training facility, a gym, a canteen, a sauna and a vegetable store were opened in the military town. Contract servicemen are accommodated in warm barracks compliant with modern requirements. The officers and their families have four apartment blocks to live in as was reported in accommodation and fit-out administration of the Defense Ministry to Interfax.

"The fit-out works carried out by our military builders will allow the garrison's personnel to complete daily official tasks in full", - as stated in the Defense Ministry's official press release. It is also reported that the construction of new facilities and fit-out works would be continued in the territory.

Tbilisi's close attention to the events is evident: the same day abkhazeti.info local site hurriedly informed of Russian high-ranking military officials' visit to Akhalgori suggesting that it was connected with military base construction. The next day, on February 5, GHN agency developed the topic reporting that in the territory of Kanchaveti village there were several ready-built constructions and a lot of construction material had been brought in. The similar situation is in Ikoti village - a barrack is under construction there. It looks like a hot-water and central-heating paradise for the local garrison soldiers who spent all winter in tents.

A few days earlier Galsky coordinator of the so-called Abkhazian government in exile Tornike Kilanava stated that four military facilities were under construction in Galsky district near-border zone: in Nabakevi, Ganakhleba, Chuburkhinji and Saberio villages.

In other words military fit-out in South Ossetia and Abkhazia is on schedule giving feedback on the other side of the border, which is a state border now. For instance Georgia's Defense Ministry published an action plan for this year. The document includes basic priorities and emergency actions to be implemented in the army. Firstly the military authority plans to analyze the post-August conflict period, provide for fulfillment of social commitments before the aggrieved and the families of the dead. Besides the document stipulates necessity to restore and rehabilitate the infrastructure affected by the war.

According to the local media the United States and Georgia are preparing a response to Russia's decision to deploy military bases in Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
