Georgian Theatre of the Absurd

2012-04-10 17:00

Georgian politics has become tough, even brutal. Everyone can become its victim, even the actors of Theatre of Young Spectators named after Nodar Dumbadze, who was fired for receiving funding from the Fund of Bidzina Ivanishvili. At the same time, the very director of the theater also received money from the oligarch.

Forty employees of the Theater n.a. Nodar Dumbadze have found themselves at the center of a political scandal quite unexpectedly. They were dismissed without explanation.

Actor Zurab Avsadzhanishvili has shared some details of the situation. He told us that the decision of the management followed immediately after the news about the extension of the contract with Ivanishvili's fund.

Previously, the theater director asked the actors to refuse to cooperate with the fund, proposing to raise their salaries. But the theater had already owed the actors of their salaries for several months by that time. They appealed to the Ministry of Culture to find out the reason for the delay, and the next day they were fired. The management has dealt with the actors very easily: the people who worked in theater for many years just failed to get to work one day.

Actors say that the head of the theater connected all the problems to the reorganization. But apparently, this is not true. "Is it possible that we were not paid wages, they canceled the performances and deducted 30 percent from the salary due to the reorganization of the theater?", the actress Asmat Khurtsidze asked herself.

The actors are willing to actively fight for their rights. An employee of the theater Kakha Gabela says it is necessary to fire the corrupt leader Michael Antadze.

A lot of well-known actors in the country have visited the Theatre of Young Spectators. Among them there are winners of international festivals, awarded with medals, and Honored Artists of Georgia.

January this year, the actors signed new contracts. Under these contracts, their salaries were increased. However, in practice, the actors received higher wages only in January, and in February their salaries became the same. Of course, a conflict occurred in the theater. 34 employees signed a statement addressed to the Minister of Culture Nikoloz Rurua. But from the Office of the Minister this statement was immediately sent back to the theater, to its supervisor Michael Antadze.

Antadze was appointed director recently. And, according to the actors, his appointment is illegal. He was hired "to update the repertoire", but the employees say, in fact the theater with centuries of history has turned into a "center to celebrate a birthday".
