"Arab Spring" in Qatar?

2012-04-18 13:40

Yesterday, Russian media spread the report of the Iranian news channel Press TV about a failed military coup in Qatar. According to the Iranians, Chief of Staff of Qatar tried to overthrow the emir Hamad al-Thani, but the monarch was saved by an American helicopter. Al Jazeera did not say a word on this occasion; other Arab media also keep silence. It is reasonable to ask whether news about military coup is the Iranian or the Syrian response to the Qatari Al Jazeera?

April 16, Iranian television channel Press TV reported the sensational news: a military coup occurred in the Arab emirate of Qatar. Personal guard of the emir al-Thani made an attempt to capture monarchical Palace in Doha. A little later, the rebels were supported by the Chief of Staff, Gen. Hamad Al-Attiyah. Palace Guard retreated, but American Special Forces took the emir's side. American helicopter came to the rescue in time and took the ruling family away in an unknown direction. As a result, the coup was suppressed. Life in the country came to normal.

Ironically, the Qatari Al Jazeera, the first newsmaker of "Arab Spring", did not say a word about the coup. Even the U.S. media - the main ally of Qatar - has kept silence. Only the Egyptian newspaper "Al-Bashair" has confirmed the Iranian information about the coup. Syrian SANA also said nothing the fact of the coup. It's very strange, considering the fact that the main sponsor of the civil war in Syria is the emir of Qatar. Aiming at Bashar al-Assad, Qatar is aiming at Iran. Maybe the Iranians have decided to respond the Qataris with the information war? As you know, the Qatari channel Al Jazeera is not sparing of any means in the war with Syria and Iran. The Iranians have every reason to pay Qatar in their own coin.

In general, there was the ground for a coup in Qatar. Shiite minority in this country lives in the position of second-class citizens. But the possibility of the Shiite scenario of "Arab Spring" in Qatar is excluded since the regime of the dynasty al-Thani is vigilantly guarded by the Americans and Saudis. Version of a palace coup is more probable. Moreover, General al-Attiyah, who is close to the emir, had tried to topple Shaikh Hamad in March 2011. The revolt was suppressed, 30 rebels were put under house arrest, but al-Attiyah was not touched.

Yevgeny Satanovsky, president of the Middle East Institute, believes that the coup took place. "This is not Iran's information war. Coup attempt took place, and it has really failed. Coups in Qatar are a common occurrence. Last coup occurred in 1995 when the current emir overthrew his father. All other attempts were unsuccessful. Events of April 16 are among them", the expert told GTimes. According to Yevgeny Satanovsky, information about General-putschist al-Attiyah is questionable.
