Caucasus will save Syrian Circassians

2012-04-20 13:27

Recently, a group of Circassians from Syria arrived in Kabardino-Balkaria. They were forced to leave the Arab Republic due to the outbreak of the political crisis in recent months. One of the returnees told our correspondent on the status of the Circassian diaspora in Syria and the situation in the country.

Shora Hussam, repatriate from Syria: "Television and other sources say that situation calms down, but when you call there - they say nothing has changed in better. In fact, situation there is very complex. In addition, there is a big problem for the Syrian Circassians. There is a city of Homs with Circassian population, where all the public entities are closed, so you can't obtain the documents".

Syrian Circassians have traditionally supported Bashar Assad. Devotion to the authorities of the country ran into the confrontation with the opposition.

Shora Hussam: "The epicenter of this war is in Homs with Circassian population; it is actually destroyed. Of course, there are killed among the Circassians, but in addition the Circassians are threatened. We've always stood for the power. If you repudiate power, the rebels also do not give a rest, they say: "Why you are not with us". There are those who favor the rebels, but there are few of them. And the situation in Syria is developing worse and worse for the Circassians".

Only hope for Russia and unity, traditional for all the people from the Caucasus, help the Syrian Circassians to survive in this situation. After all, they have not lost the spiritual connection with their homeland.

Shora Hussam: "I've never considered myself an Arab or a Syrian. All my life I knew that I was the Circassian. Syrians and Arabs resented at my words, I have often had conflicts because of it. I have never agreed to say that I am an Arab, and I had difficulties because of this; but wherever we go, we live voicing that we are Circassians. The same thing with those who live in Syria. There are exceptions everywhere and in this case too, but everyone is wholeheartedly willing to return to the Caucasus, to the homeland".

Recall, the Circassians, who reside in the territory of Syria, covered by the riots, have sent a letter of appeal to Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, the head of Adygea Aslan Tkhakushinov, as well as to the Parliament of the Republic of Adygea, and the people of the republic. In the letter they are asking to adopt them in their native land, IA Regnum reported.

"We, the Circassians of Syria, have found ourselves in very difficult state because of the worsening of political situation.
