Sochi Olympics under threat of bombing

Special Forces of Russia and Abkhazia in a joint raid have prevented the plans of militant preparing terrorist attacks during the preparation and conducting the Olympic Games in Sochi. Power agents seized an arsenal of terrorists, including man-portable air defense systems "Igla" and "Strela", the National Antiterrorist Committee reported.


May 4-5, Russian Federal Security Service with the assistance of Abkhazian State Security Service completed the operational search activities in respect of the so-called Abkhazian Jamaat - crime branch of the international terrorist organizations "Caucasus Emirate". On the territory of Abkhazia, there have been found ten caches of weapons, explosives, ammunition and other means of committing terrorist acts.

In the three caches there were found threeMANPADs "Igla" and "Strela", the two anti-tank guided rockets (ATGM) with the plants, mortar and 36 shells to it, flame thrower, "Shmel", 29 grenade launchers of various grades, 12 improvised explosive devices, 15 anti-tank and antipersonnel mines, 655 grenades for grenade launchers, 39 grenades, 50 fuses for them, a sniper rifle and two assault rifles, 15 kilograms of TNT, more than 10,000 rounds of ammunition of various calibers, as well as topographic maps.

"Russia's FSB has managed to establish that the militants were planning during 2012-2014 to move these arms in Sochi and to use to commit terrorist acts before and during the Olympic Games", said in a statement, RIA Novosti reported.

Also, with the joint efforts of the special services of Russia and Abkhazia there have been arrested three leaders of the gang "Caucasus Emirate" on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts.

"As part of the special operation we've arrested three persons who were part of the top of the "Abkhaz gang". Special forces are carrying out the necessary investigations, including searches in their places of residence, where we've also found weapons and ammunition", the NAC reported.

At the same time, as stressed by the NAC, the ringleader of the terrorist organization "Caucasus Emirate" Doku Umarov maintains close ties with the Georgian special services.
