Russian lobbyists entrenched in the EU?2009-02-18 09:56
The Georgian delegation in Brussels is going to raise the issue of formation of a separate EU-Georgia committee. This suggestion can be taken as a reaction to the activity of the EU international committee (EUIC) for investigation of causes of Georgian-Ossetian conflict which is openly disliked in Tbilisi.
This initiative according to Georgian information agencies was proposed by David Darchiashvili, European Integration Committee Chairman, before the Georgian delegation went to Brussels.
The European Union already has a parliamentary committee for South Caucasus dealing with Georgia, Azerbaijan and Armenia. However the head of the Georgian delegation believes that the committee for relations with Georgia should be formed in an independent format as Georgia-EU relations have entered a different level.
By this initiative as well as other actions official Tbilisi tries to show once again: Georgia is building its own, special, partner relations. (Here is a reminder of Mikheil Saakashvili's speechmaking in Brussels: "Georgians have been the earliest Europeans since Prometheus was enchained on the Georgian mountains and the Argonauts came to our land in search of Golden Fleece"). Maybe this is how Tbilisi is trying to set up a lobby for itself in this European organization which even without that seems to sympathize with it.
Such an idea troubles the minds of the Georgian establishment following the recent scandal around the EUIC investigation of causes of the Georgian-Ossetian conflict led by ex UN Representative to Georgia, a Swiss diplomat - Heidi Tagliavini.
At first Tbilisi received this committee (formed at its suggestion) with great enthusiasm. "The Georgian side has nothing to conceal. We are sure of our rightness!" - State minister for reintegration Temur Yakobashvili stated on February 10 according to Regnum. He was supported by the Chairman of Parliament David Bakradze.
But just a few days passed and the tonality of Tbilisi radically changed. Now the Georgian leaders demand exclusion of two representatives that allegedly hold anti-Georgian position from the committee.
The scandal was initiated by Givi Targamadze, Chairman of Defense and Security Committee who stated to the journalists: "Two experts believe that the August war was started by the Georgian side". The farther in the deeper. As a result the authorities accused the head of Hamburg University's Institute for East European Law Otto Luchterhandt and the director of Defense Analysis department at Great Britain's International Institute for Strategic Studies, Christopher Langton of...
