EU persuades Minsk to abstain from recognition of South Ossetia and Abkhazia

Javier Solana, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy persuades Alexander Lukashenko, the President of Byelorussia, not to recognize Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

The issue of recognition was touched upon at the meeting of Solana and Lukashenko held on February 19th in Minsk, Reuters informs alluding to an unnamed source in the European Commission.

Lukashenko must satisfy this condition before the meeting with the EU leaders, planned for May, the source highlighted.

On may 7th 2009 the EU plans to hold the first summit of the Eastern Partnership with participation of Byelorussia, Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan.

The tasks of the Eastern Partnership are announced: renewal of the EU political participation in a number of spheres in these countries, it includes prospective of associated agreements, economic integration and visa regime with the EU simplification.
