Since the beginning of the year, the law on the issuing of electronic identity cards operates in Georgia. For 8 months there were issued about 250,000 ID-card. Nevertheless, discontent prevails in the society. One cannot say there are no supporters of issuing electronic passports, but its opponents' discontent sounds louder than praise of its supporters. "The government wants to control our every move, every breath and exhale", the disgruntled citizens of Georgia say. Georgian Church stood up for their defense.

It all began with a small incident. The bishop of the church of St. George in Bolnisi Basil Akhvlediani forbade his parishioners to take ID-cards. In the case of disobedience, he threatened to deprive them of the blessing of the Church for a year. In his speech at one of the local TV channels, he said that citizens receiving ID, actually subscribe to the fact that they unite into a common virtual system and become its slaves. This will enable the authorities to fully control people's lives. Their every move, every breath and exhale will be fixed.

Dissatisfaction of one church gradually spread to others. Clergy speaks of diabolical nature of the electronic document: someone saw three sixes on a plastic card.

On June 5, there was held a meeting of the Synod, where the clergy discussed the pros and cons of the new electronic document, its dangers and advantages over the old ID-cards. According to them, it looks like compulsion, especially given the fact that the governments of the developed European countries, such as Britain, France and Germany, refused from compulsory introduction of e-passports into the lives of its citizens. They suggested watching the country that had introduced ID-card, and assess how the system works in practice. Synod proposed to revise a plan that implies automatic issuing of ID-card to those who gets a passport. Although there's nothing satanic in electronic passports, the Synod decided, and you can freely use them, it is necessary to introduce an alternative document to the citizen in order to relieve the anxiety of the population and to give them choice. Without an alternative document the issuing of the ID-cards looks compulsory.
