Are the Azeris the Europeans?2012-09-20 16:51
Young people from the UK, Spain, Germany, Romania, Turkey and Moldova came to Azerbaijan as part of the international event "Are we the Europeans? Identification, Integration and Exclusions". As part of the event, sponsored by the European Youth Union and Azerbaijan Youth Foundation, representatives of the aforementioned countries together with Azerbaijanis have visited Germany, Romania and Turkey. Baku hosts the final event and to sum up the results of the European Youth Gathering.
"Representatives of the Azerbaijani youth feel themselves the Europeans more and more. Integration into the European youth structures is being implemented both through government agencies and bypassing the latters. But even the most Europeanized young Azerbaijani remains committed to his country and people, and honors the traditions", the head of the Azerbaijani Youth organization AGAT Gyulsel Safarova said.
"Our organization, which is one of the initiators and organizers of the project, is working intensively with the European youth organizations and other structures. We learn a lot from them, but also contribute a lot. During dialogue we have realized that the Europeans did not know much about us. Seeing us and participating in the discussions with us, they do not hide their surprise. In Azerbaijan the guests will meet with youth leaders and visit museums and historical sites", says Safarova.
"We have taken the opportunity to inform them about the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Imagine their surprise when they found out that all the fighting took place on the territory of Azerbaijan and that we have been invaded by Armenian forces. Every ninth citizen of our country is a refugee or a displaced person", added Gyulsel Safarova.
The main goal of this project is acquaintance and rapprochement. Not only Europe is getting acquainted with us, this is a mutual process, members of the organization say. For example, in Germany there were held meetings with the European parliamentarians, government officials and professors of leading universities. We discussed the issues of cooperation in the framework of the Eastern Partnership, the European values, Euro-skepticism and the nationalism, raising the head. Young people of all the countries have expressed their attitude to these issues.
