2009-03-03 16:08Georgia wishes to return Abkhazia and South Ossetia under control in military way no longer, stated David Sikharulidze, the Minister of Defense.
There is no military solution, he said and added that Georgia does not intend to attack occupation forces. The only way is political, diplomatic solution, the minister stated in his interview to Reuters.
Sikharulidze mentioned increased activity concerning military base in Ochamchira (port in Abkhazia) deployment. The base in Gudauta is "fully operational" and under Russian control.
Besides, works on military infrastructure improvement in South Ossetia is being conducted, the Minister highlighted.
"Both the European Union and United States made their position very clear with regard to these activities. If this political pressure continues, it would play an important role in ... stopping the Russians doing what they are doing," Sikharulidze told Reuters.
According to the Minister, over 10 thousand Russian military are deployed in Abkhazia and South Ossetia. He added that refuse of Russia, South Ossetia and Abkhazia to let international monitors in undermines security in the entire region.
