Hunger in Georgian prison2012-11-02 19:31
Immediately after the partial change of power in Georgia a wave of strikes flooded the country. First, employees of a coal mine in Tkibuli demanded higher wages and better working conditions; then Chiatura miners and employees of local enterprises, owned by Georgian Magnese, joined them. Later, a warning strike paralyzed the railway traffic. And the growing discontent of prisoners closes the entire list. They are not striking, but the situation is such that an outburst can occur at any time.
It all started from the information that the detachment of special purpose entered the 16th prison, located in Rustavi; the prisoners were beaten and sent to the punishment cell. Relatives of the prisoners gathered in front of the prison and demanded a meeting with the Minister. On the other hand, according to the members of a group of the public monitoring and human rights organizations, there was no riot in the prison, and temporary hunger strike of the prisoners was over.
"Two prisoners were placed into the punishment cell without any explanation, so they started a hunger strike in protest", mother of a prisoner Mzia Topuria says. "Then they were joined by others. Now 15 prisoners have joined hunger strike. And all is quiet, no one was beaten yet". Other parent intervenes in the conversation: "We have information that riot police is inside there, that the prison chief threatens the prisoners, scaring them by saying that he is worse than Akhalaia. I do not understand why the prison chief is a person from the period of Saakashvili and Akhalaia? What should we expect from him?"
Meanwhile, a priest comes out from the prison. Father Besarion says the parents of prisoners: "I have not personally met any hunger striker. I met with people who come to confession. But they told me there were those who really were on hunger strike. They are discontent with new chief. But if there are dissatisfied, it is necessary to find out what is wrong. I saw the prisoners in the prison yard, but I noticed no stress. The church is open; I freely came in and confessed all comers. But they say that the church was closed yesterday".
After a while some of the holy fathers and members of the group of prison monitoring handed a statement of the prisoners with numerous signatures. Prisoners asked to replace the head of the prison - Levan Aburdzhania. Recall, he was appointed the chief of the 16th prison recently. According to one of the members of the monitoring group Khatuna Gagnidze, "after the appointment of Aburdzhania former officers of the Saakashvili regime returned to the prison". She even has a list of names of the officers drawn up by the prisoners.
