Bacho Akhalaia is hiding in prison?2012-11-07 19:27
Former Interior Minister Bacho Akhalaia has returned to Georgia. Immediately after the election, he and his brother Dato Akhalaia left the country, and very few people expected them to cross the border again. However, one of the most controversial Ministers of Saakashvili said that he was not going to flee, and his departure was temporary. Frankly, his statement was a surprise for everyone. But his arrest was expected. Immediately after the election, many in Georgia understood that the period of mass arrests of officials was not far off.
"I want to publicly state that I left the country temporarily. I want to appeal to the people of Georgia - I take responsibility for my every action and every step. I have returned to Georgia and I am ready to answer all questions in case of an investigation by the relevant authorities", Akhalaia stated. "In the recent time representatives of the "Georgian Dream" unleashed a dirty smear campaign against me. Some politicians are trying to cash in on rumors that allegedly I am guilty of torturing people, corruption, and this was the reason why I left the country to escape justice", writes Akhalaia.
Already this night former Minister of Defense and Internal Affairs of Georgia was detained. At first, he was summoned to court as a witness, and after several hours of interrogation he became the accused on the basis of testimony of six servicemen. In the morning Chief of Joint Staff of the Georgian Armed Forces Giorgi Kalandadze and commander of the 4th Brigade of the Defense Ministry Zurab Shamatava were arrested.
According to the prosecutor Kbilashvili, we are talking about the incident in October 2011, when, according to the investigation, Bacho Akhalaia, as Minister of Defence, in the presence of Giorgi Kalandadze and Zurab Shamatavy, inflicted verbal and physical abuse on six servicemen, and even hit one of them in the head with a haft. After that the servicemen were transferred to the base in Vaziani where the 4th Brigade of the Defense Ministry was deployed, and right on the square they were again subjected to verbal abuse. The case was opened under Article 333 (abuse of power) of the Criminal Code of Georgia.
One of the leaders of the parliamentary minority Pavle Kublashvili believes that the detention of Bacho Akhalaia, Giorgi Kalandadze and Zurab Shamatavy is nothing more than a political settling of scores on the part of the Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili and Defense Minister Irakli Alasania. Kublashvili said this at a plenary session.
