Manuchar Dzhokhadze driven to suicide2012-12-17 15:28
On December 13, the deputy head of Gardabani municipality, member of the "United National Movement" Manuchar Dzhokhadze was found hanged in his own apartment. The body was discovered by the wife of the late Maya Jokhadze.
Local and foreign media have spread information that the official's suicide could be caused by the interrogation of Manuchar Dzhokhadze a week before the suicide, on December 6.
Note, Dzhokhadze was interrogated as a witness, not an accused in the case of theft of state property in Rustavi mayor's office in 2011. Several high-ranking officials of the mayor's office have been accused of corruption links to the individuals who had participated in the auction at which the property of Rustavi mayor's office and the long steel pipes had been sold. The name of Manuchar Dzhokhadze was not mentioned in the case.
Dzhokhadze's wife, Maya Dzhokhadze, testifying in the prosecution said that they had three children and serious family problems. Family conflict began earlier this year, and in August this year the couple started living separately. In October, they officially divorced. She does not deny that Manuchar was seriously worried because of discord in the family. In November, he returned home, however, the relationship between the couple was still strained. Maya Dzhokhadze stresses that, in her opinion, Manuchar had got other problems. She remembers how often he uttered the words: "I am so tired of this problem. I'm not myself. Suicide is the only way out". But she never took her husband's words seriously.
Maya remembers that a certain man, allegedly Azerbaijani, had been visiting their house almost every day, demanding something from Manuchar. Maya is not sure, but suggests that he could demand the return of the debt.
Last conflict between spouses happened in the day of the suicide. After a quarrel Maya Jokhadze left home and came back and found the husband dead.
According to the information from the second deputy head of Gardabani municipality Araz Mashov, on December 13 Manuchar Dzhokhadze was with him a part of the day, and said that he was going to the funeral of a relative in Racha. Then he borrowed money from another friend, went home and hanged himself.
Member of the "National Movement" Irma Nadirashvili says she's expecting answers from the prosecutors. "What could have happened during an hour that a man, having canceled all his plans, decided to withdraw from life?"
