Cooperating with Russia, the US still support Georgia

2009-03-06 17:16

Cooperation with Russia doesn't mean the US renunciation to support Georgia as well as Baltic countries in their desire to be independent of Moscow, stated Hillary Clinton, the US Secretary of State in the course of her video conference with European youth, before departure for Geneva for the meeting with Sergey Lavrov, the minister of foreign Affairs of Russia - RIA Novosti.

"Our engagement with Russia in no way undermines our support for countries like Georgia or the Baltics or the Balkans to be independent, free, make their own decisions or shape their own course without undue interference from Russia," Clinton said to students and youth from the EU and political institutions across Europe.

According to the Secretary of State, there are spheres both countries could cooperate in, including struggle with terrorism and nuclear weapons spread.

Clinton reiterated "strong condemnation of Russia's actions in Georgia" and added that she is "very troubled by Russia using energy as a tool of intimidation.".
