Zestafoni on the verge of revolt2013-01-14 21:16
Strikes in Zestafoni today are a common thing. Local media repeatedly report about another revolt of the ferroalloy plant workers. Another large-scale action is close. It is scheduled for the 16th of January. But the main cause of the strike is not the demand of better conditions or pay increase.
Yesterday, the workers of the Zestafoni ferroalloy plant publicly stated that on January 16 they launch a big strike. The reason is the dismissal of their chief patron and protector, trade union leader Murman Ardzhevanidze. First associations arising after reading this statement - Italy after the war. The role and essence of the trade unions in this country at this time was undoubtedly huge. However, we are talking not about Italy, but about present Georgia. Although, of course, the Georgian people during the past year has shown a surprising unity and commonality of views on the future of their country, the unity of the workers of Zestafoni plant impresses. As stated by the Italian journalist Humberto Barbarro, "the unity is the main condition to become the winner". So for the Zestafoni
workers this is the main value that should be protected by all means.
The dismissal of the trade union leader Ardzhevanidze by the management of the plant has caused a strong reaction among the workers.
"If on January 15, our requirements are not fulfilled, and Ardzhevanidze is not restored to his former position, we hold a warning strike on January 16. If after this the management does not come to its senses, and our demands are not fulfilled, we start an immediate large-scale strike", said one of the workers, Tato Peradze.
Apparently, the plant workers consider Murman Ardzhevanidze the real caring father. They say: "He's a man you can trust. If something happens to us or members of our families, he shows a fatherly care". These are the words of another worker, Tamaz Bazgadze.
The official reason for the dismissal sounded by the plant's management is the incident when Murman Ardzhevanidze missed the work without telling anyone. When a monitoring group, controlling the attendance and operation of the workers, came to the plant, Ardzhevanidze was absent. This undefended non-attendance has allegedly angered the management. Colleagues rose to his defense. "He is an honest man", they say. "He is fighting for the rights of workers. Entire crew confirms that Ardzhevanidze was at work that day, though, he was late for 20 minutes, just because of his trade union affairs", says Giorgi Giorgadze. But the administration of the plant has not taken their arguments.
