Georgians without fish2013-01-17 16:52
First place on the number of rivers in the Caucasus undoubtedly belongs to Georgia. The whole country is covered by numerous river arteries supplying farmers with staple food - fish. The country has never had problems with the water. While in neighboring Baku you have to boil water before drinking, in Tbilisi you can drink right from the tap. But with the advent of technological progress the situation is changing radically. Even fish does not want to live in the river waters of Georgia.
In the early hours the Bartshana River in Batumi changes color. As people say, the unusual lime-white stream of water is carrying dead fish. "It's ok what you see now. In the morning, the river was the same color, as if someone had poured white paint, and it's not for the first time. They must react somehow. I'm sure the color of the river caused by waste from the caffeine plant. Another misfortune is the nearest terminal with the smell of oil. Neighbors send their children away, in the village. Plants and factories are the real problem for many years, Can't they take at least some action?", Akaki Koridze, resident of Batumi asks himself. "The Bartshana River brings dead fish every day. There are no even traces of animals. Even algae are white".
Fishermen are very upset by this phenomenon: "We use to fish here, feed our families. We have never got great catch, but it was enough to feed family. River was small, clean and suitable for swimming. Now it is suitable only to drown yourself. It is emitting a terrible smell, in fact the river is dead", says Gulliver Zhgenti, Batumi resident.
Environmental management of Adjara has commented the situation: "The factory "Batoili" periodically pours rinse water into the river when cleaning devices are overloaded and do not work. This is organic compounds that are not dangerous; but if death of fish is recorded, the reason is different. We'll send a group to study the situation and notify you of the results".
Bartshana River flows into the sea, and its water bar has a special color at several tens of meters. Under the law of Georgia, dumping of the factory, household and other waste into the water is strictly prohibited and punishable by administrative code.
Risk of fish death in large and small rivers, as well as in ponds near Tbilisi - this is not only an environmental issue. A study, the purpose of which was to identify the species of fish living in the river, has been conducted. During the day only two or three species of fish stuck in the net installed specially for this purpose.
