  • Is there a way to stop Georgia’s decay? 2010-03-15 09:55 Tbilisi is promoting its new strategy of bringing back Abkhazia and South Ossetia, while the authorities of Tskhinval are closing the door to the past: they start delimitating the state border. The demarcation line should bring the republic even more territories than it has got at the moment. The Georgian opposition is appealing to the Kremlin for help to avoid further decay of the country. However, is Moscow able to help, and if so, is there any way to do it?
  • Georgian wine back to Russia? 2010-03-11 22:41 Hardly is there anyone who doubts abnormality of Russian-Georgian relations. The events of 2008 when two neighboring states turned into enemies for the first time in their history is simply beyond any reasonable explanation. Current developments in bilateral relations of two states are incomprehensible either – at least as far as return of Georgian produce to the Russian market is concerned.
  • Lobio won’t buy lobby 2010-03-10 17:17 Georgia has hired new lobbying firms in the USA. Without them Mikheil Saakashvili’s meetings with influential politicians like Barack Obama are no more possible. It seems the Georgian leader has communication problems not only with Russian leaders to whom he either sends relatives or his Armenian counterpart.

Spring maneuvers of the president

2009-03-11 14:51

9/4/2/1942.jpegGeorgian opposition is pursuing their offensive on all fronts. Its leaders are giving out ultimatums and smart accusations against Saakashvili. There is signature collection among the population for his resignation. Now "Alliance for Georgia" and "United opposition" are taking the lead. In spite of loud statements of the opponents the president looks quite calm.

Responding to the agitation of the opposition Saakashvili makes it quite clear that he is going to maintain his position. For instance last weekend the police dispersed a protest action organized by "November 7" oppositional movement. If a week ago its representatives called on resignation of Interior Minister Vano Merabishvili, on March 9 they switched over to Saakashvili. The result is the same: the police dispersed the protesters. In reply "November 7" came forward with another ultimatum for the authorities. A third one from the opposition. The movement demanded that their leader Dacha Tsaguria who had been arrested at the time of the action dispersion be released before 18.00 of the same day (March 9). Otherwise the oppositionists promised to pitch a tent camp in front of the parliament. The activist was released with the obligation to pay a 400 lari (160 dollars) penalty for violation of public order. However Tsaguria stated he was not going to comply with the court's order. Moreover it was decided to take review against the judgment. So even in this case sorting out of relations between the opposition and the authorities finished in endless halls of the judicial system.

The holiday weekend in Georgia was abundant with sorting out of relations. Ex-ambassador to Russia Erosi Kitsmarashvili notorious with his scandalous accusations against the president and his confidants, stated to the Georgian media that Irakli Kodua, Interior Ministry General, had beaten him in the face of numerous witnesses at Gudauri ski resort. Kitsmarishvili asserts the general's family took part in the beating.

As Interfax reports Kitsmarishvili addressed the Interior Ministry leaders and had no response. Then the ex-ambassador referred to Georgia's ombudsman Sozar Subari. The initiation of a criminal case on the beating accident is suspended. As well as Kitsmarishvili's claim on "expropriation" of his assets in Rustavi-2 TV by the authorities.

Yesterday "Democratic Movement - United Georgia" party expressed its indignation over the PR-campaign opened against Nino Burdzhanadze. Recently her teammates supporting her anti-government position but competitors for leadership in the opposition came forward with accusations against Nino Anzarovna.
