Officials shaming Azerbaijan2013-02-14 17:21
The recent unrest in the district center of Ismayilla has again drawn attention to the situation of the Russians in Azerbaijan. This is due to the fact that the village of Ivanovka, where the only remaining kolkhoz in Azerbaijan is located, is in this area. The name of the village shows that the main population here is the Russian Old Believers. And the discontent of the villagers is related to the withdrawal of their land plots.
In Soviet times, the farm village Ivanovka was the most successful agricultural enterprise in Azerbaijan. Farm-millionaire not only produced, but also successfully sold the harvest in the shops under the name "Ivanovka". "The success of this farm was ensured by several components. Population of this village is hard-working. In the Soviet era there were created special conditions, which partly came from Moscow as part of the Soviet ideology. They needed an example of a very successful economy", says the expert Elchin Aliyev. According to Aliyev, cultivated areas of Ivanovka comprised nearly half of all cultivated areas of Ismayilla. Thus, after the territory division the population of Ivanovka would have got more land than residents of other villages. And this causes social injustice.
An additional difficulty for the population of Ivanovka was the fact that living compactly they almost could not communicate in the Azerbaijani even in the Soviet years. And after obtaining independence and the declaration of the Azerbaijani the state language they got new problems both in terms of communication and in terms of paperwork. "This is the objective difficulties that have been overcome in some time. Today the youth of Ivanovka speaks Azeri no worse than any Azeri", says Elchin Aliyev.
The heads of executive authorities of the area have appeared greedy for gain. If the previous authorities were satisfied with the oppression of the Azerbaijanis, the current head of the area Nizami Alekperov has got to Ivanovka. According to the expert Elchin Aliyev, this is due to the fact that the rest of the region, everything they could lay their hands on without resorting to complete lawlessness, was under full control. While in Ivanovka the situation was somewhat different. "Having put pressure on the local population, officials tried to force them to abandon the farm, and then buy up the land. To achieve this goal they used all the means. They even created obstacles to that had led loss of crops", said Aliyev.
