Council of Europe to discuss Georgian Law on Occupied Territories
2009-03-12 11:24At the today's meeting the Venetian Commission of the Council of Europe will discuss the Law on Occupied Territories, endorsed by the Parliament of Georgia. Akakiy Minashvili, the Chairman of the Georgian parliamentary Committee for foreign relations will attend the meeting.
The Parliament of Georgia explains that the Council of Europe has some remarks for the law, which will be uttered at the Commission meeting, as well as some recommendations.
The Parliament of Georgia adopted the Law on Occupied Territories in October 2008. This document defines the legal status of Abkhazia, South Ossetia and all the territories Georgia regards as "occupied" by the Russian troops in August 2008 and which are out of jurisdiction of the central Georgian leadership. Besides, the law implies certain political, economic amd legal restrictions, and sanctions for breaking these restrictions.
