Poor weekdays of Georgian workers2013-05-27 16:08
For several days the workers of the Georgian Zestafoni ferroalloy plant are on strike. But even though they have taken extreme measures in the form of a hunger strike, the company management remains unwavering. They believe that unknown forces are behind the workers, inciting them to put forward unrealistic and inadequate requirements. From today, the administration is going to announce vacancies, considering that it is cheaper to hire new employees than to satisfy the requirements of the old workers.
After the October parliamentary election in 2012, a wave of strikes covered the whole country was. Miners of the LLC "Georgian manganezi," workers of the Poti port and plant in Zestaphoni went on strike. A wave of protests and discontent covered the entire working Georgia. People were protesting against the inhuman working conditions and demanded a wage increase. The Labor Code fully protected the interests of employers. However, due to an agreement with the "Georgian manganezi," which has made some concessions, the strike ended. As it turned out, it was just the calm before the storm.
The fact is that the administration had promised the workers phased satisfaction of all their claims, and this made them calm down. However, the agreed period has expired and the process has stuck somewhere in the middle tier.
Six day ago the strike of the workers of ferroalloy plant resumed with renewed vigor. Their demands have become more categorical and gained clear contours. The workers demand 50 percent wage increase and 20 percent increase for the night work. Three strikers have resorted to at least protest - hunger strike. Bregvadze Gogh, Anton Bibilashvili and Ramaz Peradze started hunger strike since the morning of May 23.
At the moment the situation at the enterprise is very tense. Chiaturi miners are going to join the Zestafoni workers, which will cause a new wave of strikes in the whole region. The administration of the ferroalloy plant considers the demands inadequate and completely refuses to lead negotiations with them. The head of "Georgian American Elioz" says the company is outraged by the actions of some vague group that is misleading the workers.
