No problems in Georgian army2009-04-02 12:24
Recently Georgia received a military delegation from the USA led by Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff James Cartwright. He was satisfied with the situation in the Georgian army promising to continue American-Georgian partnership in military sphere.
"We are ready to actively support Georgia in army reforms; - Cartwright is quoted by ITAR-TASS. - The USA will assist Georgia in reinforcement of armed forces, their reformation and retraining of Georgian servicemen in every possible way". According to him American specialists have already analyzed and evaluated the actions to be done in order to pursue cooperation of the two countries in politico-military sphere. First of all this is improvement of Georgia's defense capacity.
Cartwright's visit to Tbilisi was not accidental. Firstly the cooperation between the countries in military sphere is stipulated in the Charter signed in January. Secondly Mikheil Saakashvili is still hoping to join NATO and Georgia's army compliance with the standards of the North Atlantic Alliance is one of the core criteria. Judging by the reports of the American general Georgia has made certain progress here.
"I must say you have a very good army, - Cartwright's words are quoted by OSinform. - I would specifically recall the meeting with the servicemen. I am glad that we'll keep cooperating with them in the future. The strategic partnership we are developing day by day is very important".
No doubt the words of Cartwright were like balm for the Georgian president's soul. For the first time over a long period his political strains have been appreciated by the closest strategic ally - the United Stated. "Your visit means that in politico-military sphere Georgia and the USA are passing onto a completely new, qualitatively different stage of cooperation, - Vesti are quoting the president of Georgia. - Georgia will continue formation of a modern army for sound provision of security with better trained servicemen, will enhance their numerical strength and upgrade their technical equipment".
Besides Saakashvili thanked the new US administration for supporting Georgia. By tradition Russia as "the major enemy" was given a "kick" from the Georgian president: "Today Georgia is in a rather tough situation being on one hand affected by the global crisis that broke out immediately after the aggression against us, - Our Abkhazia quotes. - And having 20% of its territory occupied with Georgia's enemy doing its best to hamper our growth on the other".
