Why Mr. Ebralidze will not obtain the Georgian citizenship30.07.2009 | 23:02
Mikhail Saakashvili will not have a moment's rest, being troubled either by thieves in law exported by Georgia to Russia, nor the businessmen with their criminal past that have resided in Moscow. They are checking the Georgian president for strength, as well as for loyalty to democratic values. It is not only the Georgian prisons that are to be filled with the authorities extradited from the whole of the post-Soviet territory; it is also the businessmen who started demanding citizenship.
The point is that Alexander Ebralidze, a well-known Russian businessman with a scandalous past, a native of Georgia, suddenly turned to Mikhail Saakashvili with a request to admit him to the Georgian citizenship. He says he wishes to take part in the presidential election that is to take place in 2013; so far, his is going to make his own contribution into restoration of Georgia's "territorial integrity". Mr. Ebralidze told the journalists that he is ready to acquire the Georgian nationality, move to Georgia and engage in politics, issue a newspaper, open a radio station and a TV station.
This businessman from St. Petersburg had announced his plans to strive for the Georgian presidency before. On 30 May 2009, the Georgian pro-governmental TV channel Rustavi-2 broadcasted an on-air interview with Alexander Ebralidze.
"Yes, I am truly intended to run for the presidency. I am absolutely sure of myself. I have got my own business and many other activities. I have always been far from politics and never strained after it; we have always been at different poles. It is not me who has come into politics, it is politics that has come to me after the August 2008 war. I am sure that the current situation is close to the point when we, the Georgians, must solve our problems; otherwise, we may lose the territories, the nation, and the people". President of the World Congress of People of Georgia Alexander Ebralidze also informed that he is planning to establish his own political team to take active part in Georgia's political life.
With reference to the words of Alexander Ebralidze, the TV company reported that to achieve his final goal, the Georgian presidency, he is going to hold negotiations with political parties in order to consolidate the opposition around himself. "Sooner or later, they are going to consolidate around me. In the nearest future, there is going to appear a person or a group of people that will raise the issue of changing the constitution", - president of the World Congress of People of Georgia stated two months ago.
It looks like this candidate for the Georgian presidency is able to spot Mikhail Nikolozovitch himself, who has long since determined that "the state is me".
One should admit that Alexander Ebralidze is a person no less flamboyant. In his youth, he was instituted criminal proceedings twice. According to the Russian media, in the middle 90-s he was considered to be "one of the authorities of the criminal Petersburg" nicknamed Alik-Rynok (Alik-Market). According to the same data, in Petersburg, he represented the interests of the Georgian "thieves in law" from Moscow.
Today, the interests of the respectable businessman Alexander Ebralidze are focused upon the hotel, restaurant and gambling business, as well as in the construction, development, trade, transport and banking sector of Petersburg. Besides, he possesses a number of real estate units in the city. In 2007, according to the Finance Russian magazine, he occupied the 444th place among the 500 richest people of Russia with a 100-million-dollar fortune.
Right after the failure of the so-called "Mukhrovani mutiny", the Georgian authorities announced that they consider Alexander Ebralidze to be the sponsor of this unsuccessful military coup.
"The name of the man that organized the mutiny is Alexander Ebralidze. I kept silent until he said himself that after the military mutiny which failed he could wait no longer and was going to run for the presidency in Georgia. Since January 2008, some mutineers have met several times in one of the CIS states to plan this mutiny. Alexander Ebralidze's final goal was to cause disorder in the country as a minimum and to prepare the ground for bringing Russian occupying forces to Tbilisi as a maximum", - Head of the parliamentary committee for defense and national safety, delegate of the United National Movement ruling political party Givi Targamadze stated.
In response to these accusations, Alexander Ebralidze said: "I even do not know these people (Tariel Oniani, Bondo Shalikiani), with whom I am supposed to be connected. My position is to wait for the final opinion of the investigation. Then I am going to go to law and make this man (Givi Targamadze) apologize. I am not trying to conceal my past including the fact that I have been tried before. This is part of my life. My past is a point of interest for those who have got nothing else to say or to counter with".
Now, the Georgian president's circle keeps raking over the past of the Petersburg businessman. They have gone as far as finding out that Vladimir Putin has more than once had dinner in the fashionable restaurant of Talion belonging to Ebralidze.
So, it is Moscow's speedy hands again!
