Opposition: Battle for Democracy or for Tbilisi Mayor’s Chair?01.09.2009 | 21:04
The Georgian opposition is going to resume its acts of protest in autumn. Before September the leaders of numerous opposition parties say this vying with each other. In the summer months the Georgian citizens got out of the habit of meetings and acts of protest. It seems that the opposition is ready to measure swords with the authorities at the elections of the Mayor of Tbilisi, too. Does it mean that the authorities have gained their time and now can live waiting for 2013 when the next President election is planned to take place?
The Georgian Opposition will announce its plans and further tactics of struggle with President Mikhail Saakashvili's regime. The leaders of several opposition parties have declared it simultaneously. According to the VZGLYAD newspaper, the General Secretary of the «For United Georgia» movement Eka Beselia noted: «Currently we are actively discussing our plans».
The Conservative Party of Georgia said they had not decided yet in what form, from what date and according to what timescale opposition protest acts will take place. At the same time conservatives confirm that next autumn will be stormy.
The leader of the «Democratic Movement - United Georgia» movement, Ex Speaker of the Parliament Nino Burdjanadze said to the journalists that the opposition will continue acting as required in order to achieve radical and real changes in the country, as well as the replacement of the country authorities. She says that till late summer opposition leaders will hold regional meetings with the population.
Today, a day before the beginning of the calendar autumn, Burdjanadze declared that soon she will publish some serious materials compromising President Mikhail Saakashvili and the members of his government, says VZGLYAD citing the Georgian paper «Kviris palitra» (Palette of the Week). The ex revolution mate of Mikhail Nikolaevich threatened she «would struggle while she was alive, until she was physically destroyed».
The opposition accuses Saakashvili of violation of democratic freedoms, establishment of an autocratic, police-supported regime in the country. Some experts are inclined to believe that many opposition members are settling their personal scores with Saakashvili. I.e., politicians settle their personal scores, but this has nothing to do with the protest charge in the society. In particular, in August Eka Beselia's son and her brother were arrested. Her son Rati Milorava was released on bail, and her brother was condemned to a two-month preliminary statement.
And the latest conflict of the authorities with Burdjanadze is about its datcha that once was given to her by Mikhail Nikolaevich himself and then taxed for one million dollars. The datcha will soon be sold by auction according to a decision of the Tbilisi City Court. Nino Anzorovna could perfectly give the house to some nursing home but she has not done this. So Georgian politicians continue their litigation with each other, while many citizens are perplexed about their obstinacy.
However, Nino Burdjanadze has not kept her promise to publish the compromising materials which could be quite enough for the confrontation months. Today's press conference of the leader of the «Democratic Movement - United Georgia» was dedicated to the assignment of Bacho Akhalaya to the post of the Georgian Minister of Defense. As Burdjanadze said, such policy of Mikhail Saakashvili damages the defense system and the co-operation of Georgia with the West, says GHN.
«During my visit to the US I was a testimony of the concern expressed by some top representatives of the State Department and Ministry of Defense even before Bacho Akhalaya received the post of a Deputy Minister of Defense. Any democratic country would bring a criminal suit against Bacho Akhalaya, but according to Saakashvili's decision Akhalaya is receiving the post of Minister of Defense», - said the ex supporter of the Georgian leader. In her words, the assignment of Akhalaya as the Minister of Defense will let Saakashvili use the army for political purposes, subdue the Ministry of Internal Affairs and transform it into a police department.
The assignment of the Minister of Defense was noisy. Mikhail Nikolaevich seemed to tease the opposition that had just calmed down putting its young member on the Minister of Defense post. It is Bacho Akhalaya that the opposition accuses of organizing the so-called zonder brigades dealing shortly with oppositionists.
In the opinion of the ex State Minister for Conflict Settlement, one of today's opposition leaders Georgy Khaindrava, some spontaneous riots can happen in the country. «Georgia is on the brink of a civil explosion», said Khaindrava. In his words, it all «will bring quite hard consequences for President Mikhail Saakashvili and for his criminal company». According to the politician, «only extreme radicalism can defeat this government», says the «Akhali taoba» newspaper.
