Abkhazia's afraid of the Georgia's rematch20.04.2012 | 14:47
Georgia, along with its Western allies, is trying to disrupt the international recognition of Abkhazia. This was stated by the Foreign Minister of the country Vyacheslav Chirikba during a press conference in Moscow.
Vyacheslav Chirikba, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Abkhazia: "Ironically, those countries that have made the promotion of democracy and observance of the rights of human and peoples their foreign policy doctrine, a kind of flag or a slogan, they have virtually declared "crusade" against the release of Abkhazia and South Ossetia from international isolation. They use blackmail, threats at a very high level, even at the level of the U.S. Secretary of State, who is calling to the heads of those states, which have recognized Abkhazia or are going to do it. We have a letter from Hillary Clinton with hidden threats to terminate financial assistance to those countries that have recognized Abkhazia, to withdraw recognition. Her deputy, Philip Gordon, has virtually
boasted that he had influenced on the president of the Dominican Republic to make him change his mind and not to recognize Abkhazia. There were also threats against Belarus, Kazakhstan and other countries".
Minister of Foreign Affairs of Abkhazia believes that current Georgia's government has not yet left the thought of a possible rematch and force return of the Republic under the sovereignty of Tbilisi.
Vyacheslav Chirikba: "The main objective of Georgia is to isolate Abkhazia and to put all the movements of its people and leadership under control. However, of course, this is an impossible task in our time, given the recognition of Abkhazia by Russia, a great power, as well as opportunities to travel, the Internet and globalization. It is impossible to isolate people. So-called "neutral passport" that Georgia has proposed to the West, are not neutral, they are Georgian passports. Their country code is "Georgia" and they are issued by the Georgian Interior Ministry. It is not clear why they are "neutral". Given the nature of the Georgian leadership, which is obsessed with idea of revenge against Abkhazia and South Ossetia, I think a breakthrough in this field is very unlikely".
Abkhaz authorities have expressed concern that Georgia is actively preparing Army Reserve in recent years. The official Sukhum also warns Western countries about the danger of arms supplies to the Georgian military.
Vyacheslav Chirikba: "Of course, Georgia has a very energetic president who does not let anyone relax, he always has some new initiatives, mostly of a military nature, unfortunately. The fact that Georgia gets a very large financial, political and military support from the West - the U.S., Israel, Turkey; this gives him belief that he can continue the policy of pressure on Abkhazia and South Ossetia, to blackmail Russia and to try to benefit some political dividends from this. Because Saakashvili - is the politician that thrives in times of crisis, he always needs a crisis. He successfully creates these crises. Unfortunately, after these crises, Georgia lost a lot - in political terms. However, I think that most of the responsibility is on those countries that supply weapons to Georgia and train their armed forces. This gives Saakashvili the confidence that the military "Reconquista", a military revenge is possible in respect of Abkhazia. This is, of course, a dangerous utopia. Nevertheless, he's continuing playing with fire. Actually, you better do not give a match to a naughty boy. He would start a fire".
Recall, on Tuesday, April 16, the head of the Abkhazian Foreign Ministry Vyacheslav Chirikba held talks with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov.
During the talks, Lavrov and Chirikba have discussed the issues of interaction within the framework of the Geneva discussions on security and stability in the Caucasus, in which Abkhazia is involved along with Russia, South Ossetia, Georgia, and USA, and under the collective co-chairmanship of the UN, OSCE and EU.
