NATO must cancel the military maneuvers in Georgia - 14 April, 20092009-04-14 10:27
NATO leadership must cancel the multinational maneuvers under the aegis of the Alliance in the territory of Georgia, which, in the light of August 2008 conflict in the region, will be of definitely anti-Russian character, said Anatoliy Tsyganok, the director of the Center for Military Forecasting Institute of Political and Military Analysis of Russia, member of the Public Council at the Ministry of Defense of Russia - RIA Novosti.gt-en-newsitem-inside
The Cooperative Lancer/Cooperative Longbow multinational maneuvers must be held in the territory of the Vaziani military base in Georgia. Since May 3rd to June 3rd in the framework of the NATO Partnership for Peace program. The maneuvers comprise the two parts: the stuff and the field ones and imply participation of about 900 military from 23 NATO member countries and the Alliance partners' countries. Such maneuvers will be held in Georgia for the first time. "In the light of the gradual resumption of the cooperation between Russia and NATO, which we has seen in the recent time, conducting such maneuvers will be another slap in the face to our country, and they will be of anti- Russian character", the expert said.
According to Tsyganok, it is not the first time when NATO conducts or tries to conduct the large-scale maneuvers in vicinity of Russia and in fact, acts regardless of the own recommendations on necessity to normalize relations with Russia.
At the March meeting in Brussels the NATO member countries' Foreign Ministers decided to restore the full-scale cooperation of the Alliance with Russia. Dmitri Rogozin, the Permanent Representative of Russia to NATO, confirmed this desire and mentioned that the period of alienation in relation of Russia and the NATO was practically passed, and there is no insurmountable discords. According to the agency interlocutor, NATO presence in the territory of Georgia cannot but worry Russia, and the intention to hold the "multinational maneuvers" in that country is of provocative character. "In the present-day situation it is better to cancel these maneuvers. And in what other way it can be estimated? Just when the summit in Strasbourg, where the readiness to restore normal work of the Russia-NATO Council was held , as the Alliance conducts the maneuvers in Georgia without even asking the opinion of the Russian side", Tsyganok said.
