Russia will not participate in NATO maneuvers in Georgia

2009-04-17 15:34

Russia refused to participate in NATO military maneuvers in Georgia, planned for May 2009.

"The negative attitude of Russia to conducting these maneuvers is known pretty well. How can there be any talks of our participation in them? Surely, we will not," the Department of Information and Press of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia said to RBC.

Yesterday the Alliance representatives in Brussels proposed Moscow to join the military maneuvers in the territory of Georgia in May 2009. According to today's messages, NATO didn't heed the Russian foreign Ministry's calls to renounce the maneuvers.

According to the communiqué, spread today by the Alliance headquarters in Brussels, the maneuvers will be held from May 6th to June 1st 20 kilometers (about 12.4 miles) away from Tbilisi; 1 300 military servicemen from 19 NATO member and partner countries will participate.

"The very fact of holding this military exercise at the time when the internal situation in Georgia is worsening is a reason to suspect that it is an act of interference in the internal affairs of this country," said Dmitri Rogozin, the Permanent Representative of Russia to NATO.

"We expect the right conclusions to be drawn from the August 2008 events, in particular that to arm Georgia is dangerous" Sergey Lavrov the Foreign Minister of Russia, said. "I hope the NATO nations, in planning further cooperation with Georgia under the Partnership for Peace program (in which practically all countries of the post-Soviet space participate), will avoid steps that might again prompt in the Georgian regime a feeling of all-permissiveness and impunity," he added.
