Today President Mikheil Saakashvili signed an order to conduct actions aimed to establish the State Constitutional Commission to propose changes to the Constitution - RIA Novosti.gt-en-newsitem-inside
Avtandil Demetrashvili, the professor of Tbilisi State Ivane Javakhashvili University was appointed the chairman; to June 14th he must present the Commission regulations for endorsement.
About 70 persons will participate in the Commission work, among them: representatives of the ruling party and opposition, state structures and non-governmental sector. Candidates must be presented to the Speaker of the Parliament to June 20th. To participate in the Commission work, political parties must present one candidate each. Among the parties eligible to participate: the governing party, and parties of parliamentary and non-parliamentary opposition. Besides, the chairman of the Commission will be presented candidates from power structures and officials. Three will be presented by the President; three by the Parliament; three by the government; one from each - the High Council of Justice, the High Court, the Constitutional Court, the National Security Council, the Chamber of Control, the National Bank, the Public Defender.
Also one candidate from each: the High Council of the so-called Abkhazian autonomous republic in exile, the high Council of Ajaria autonomous republic, Administration of the temporary administrative and territorial unit in the territory of the ex-autonomous district of South Ossetia. 17 candidates altogether. Nine NGOs may be represented by 1 candidate each ( Young Lawyers Association, Just Elections, New Generation-New Initiative, Alpe fund, Liberty Institute, the UN Youth Organizaion, International Transparency - Georgia, 42nd Article of Constitution, Caucasian Institute.
Also invited representatives of academic circles, political scientists, lawyers Levan Alexidze, Giya Getsadze, Vasil Gonashvili, Georgi Kakhiani, Georgi Kverenchkhiladze, Malkhaz Matsaberidze, Zaza Rukhadze, Iakob Putkaradze, Kakhi Kurashvili, Nana Chigladze, Zurab Jibgashvili, David Aprasidze, Ketevan Kokrashvili, Soso Tsintsadze, Zaza Bibilashvili, Marina Garishvili, Mziya Lekveishvili, Giya Nodia, Tornike Gordadze, and Zurab Davitashvili - 20 people altogether.
