UAE has blocked Pravda.Ru, a popular Russian Internet resource2009-06-18 11:30
According to the incoming information, Pravda.Ru http://www.pravda.ru/, a popular Internet resource, was suddenly blocked by Etisalat, the major Internet-provider of the United Arab Emirates without any preliminary warning or claim. Therefore, the UAE users were denied access to the popular Internet edition.gt-en-newsitem-inside
According to the statistical reports analysis, the number of users in UAE started to decrease drastically in February, as our colleagues explained. Pravda.Ru has got its loyal readership, for there are many Russians working or vacating there, as well as the citizens from other republics of the former USSR.
As we have been informed, the editorial staff of Pravda.Ru appealed to the UAE Embassy in Moscow. The Embassy officially stated that they do not know anything about the web-site blocking. The statement was followed by non-official comments: "The access to the web-site may be blocked if it is a quality web-site threatening moral or national safety".
Nothing wrong can be said about Pravda.Ru allowing any publications that could hurt the feelings of the Muslims, for at the same time, the amount of the web-site visitors from Iran practically remained unchanged, and this country maintains more severe Internet control than the Emirates.
It looks like the situation is changing. According to the users' reports, as we have been told in Pravda.Ru, the web-site can be easily accessed from Dubai. Besides, another statistics analysis has shown that the materials of the edition are now viewed in UAE, for Etisalat, being the major Internet-provider, is not the only one.
Still, it is not clear why the access to Pravda.Ru in the Emirates has been blocked. The experts have shared their views with GeorgiaTimes.
Specially for GeorgiaTimes, the situation has been commented upon by Elena Zelinskaya, Vice President of MediaSoyuz, SAMI Secretary General and Member of The RF Public Chamber:
-I would certainly ask this question. A large number of the Russian tourists go on vacation to the Emirates. Many businessmen have got business contacts there; many have built amicable relations with those who live in UAE. How are these people going to do without Pravda.Ru? I believe those who have taken such ungrounded measures should think about it.
The readership of Pravda.Ru is very large; all of us read this resource with great interest. Wherever we are, we all want to click the button and learn the news and comments from Pravda.Ru.
I think this measure is absolutely ungrounded and there is hardly a reasonable explanation to it. Internet is a link between us, which is the main point. If you want to feel part of the world, you are to be on-line. Thus, such measures usually turn against those who undertake them, at least, in the terms of reputation.
