As Georgia left CIS it lost the prospect of economic development

2009-08-19 18:30

Having quitted the CIS, Georgia deprived itself of opportunity of real economic integration and own development, said Vadim Gustov, the chairman of the Council of Federation for CIS Affairs [Russia] - ITAR TASS.

CIS "considering complicated processes in the world passes to real affairs, significant common programs - in energy, transport, customs", he underlined. He drew special attention to the Customs Union, and called the structure "EU-tested" . "I know that many CIS member would like to join the Customs Union, as it gives great opportunities for free andquick movement of goods and people without trouble ", Gustov added. He reminded that "most goods, manufactured in CIS, are in demand in that market, and the tendency will last for at least the nearest decade".

Previously Georgia Times reported that that since August 18th 2009 Georgia is the CIS member no longer. After its walkout from the Commonwealth, Tbilisi will be able to continue to participate in about 70 treaties, the press service informed. As for the treaties and decisions effective only for CIS members, they shall not apply to Georgia as of August 18, 2009. The list of such documents includes over 400 titles.

The decision to quit CIS was initiated by the Georgian government, on Mikheil Saakashvili's order, on August 12th 2008. On August 14th 2008 the Parliament of Georgia unanimously voted for withdrawal from three core agreements in the framework of CIS. On August 18, 2008 the Georgian Foreign Ministry notified the CIS Executive of the country's decision to sever ties with the CIS.
