Saakashvili regards Tagliavini’s report as the diplomatic victory of Georgia2009-10-02 12:01
Mikheil Saakashvili, the President of Georgia, claimed the report of Heidi Tagliavini's commission "the diplomatic victory of Georgia". - Reuters. "This is a big diplomatic victory for Georgia," Saakashvili said yesterday. "We proved that we were right and it will always be so."gt-en-newsitem-inside
"The fact that such a document was created will be enough in one, five, 20 or 30 years to bring a lawsuit and all leaders of this country (Russia) who committed war crimes and ethnic cleansing will be brought to international justice."
"Yesterday the Commission said there are no facts Georgia attacked the peacemakers. That was the first lie. The lie #2: "our citizens were there". The commission said there were no citizens, they were citizens of Georgia... Lie #3: "Georgians committed genocide of Ossetians"... In the course of heroic confrontation of our guys no woman and no child were killed in the places we controlled, and where our armed forces came... Women and children, unfortunately, died where Geoegian positions were shelled... The authoritative international commission confirmed it", Saakashvili said.
Opposition disagrees with such a positive perception of the report.
The international commission on investigation of the August war recognized Georgia as an aggressor, and it might add stimulus to the process of recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, believes Shalva Natelashvili, the leader of pro-opposition Labour party. "The process of international isolation of our country will continue, the legitimization of recognition of Abkhazia and so-called South Ossetia will deepen, and finally it can end with an immense confrontation within the country", Natelashvili said
Nino Burjanadze, the Democratic Movement-United Georgia accused the authorities of the attempt to conceal the truth about hr report of Heidi Tagliavini's commission. "Even the authorities of Georgia themselves don't doubt the objectivity of the commission's conclusion, though its assessments of our country and the authorities are gravest", she said.
The Alliance for Georgia representatives stated the conclusion of the commission is gravely for the Goegian government and prove the irresponsibility of the decision on the assault. They believe the issue of shift of power in the country became more acute, and can be resolved peacefully and constitutionally by just elections.
