Tbilisi Mayor’s Office Says No to Rights Defenders’ Rally on November 23

2009-11-20 16:32

Tbilisi Mayor's office denied Georgian NGOs a rally on November 23 in Rustaveli avenue.

The related notification was submitted to the mayor's office a few days earlier.

As chairman of Ex Political Prisoners for Human Rights NGO Nana Kakabadze told RIA Novosti today the action coincides with the 6th anniversary of the Rose Revolution that took place in Georgia in 2003.

Together with Ex Political Prisoners for Human Rights NGO over twenty other NGOs (including Law for People, 42nd Article of the Constitution, November 7 and others) and public movements were planning to hold rallies.

According to Kakabadze "the reason for denial was that November 23 is a religious holiday (Giorgoba - Saint George's Day, the patron saint of Georgia) and various events are planned to take place in Rustaveli avenue leaving no room for us".

"The aim of the rally was to demonstrate drawbacks of Saakashvili's rule to the people. We planned to organize an exhibition to show publications by various rights defending organizations on various spheres and show films on human rights violations. The people would then have a possibility to ask any questions and join in the debates with rights defenders", - Kakabadze underlined.

Remarkably, the mayor's office considers rally applications for five days so the rights defenders have no time to get a reply to a new application for a rally in a different location.

  • Shuffling the personnel pack 2010-03-17 15:52 Shuffling the personnel pack The scandal with the TV piece about the staged war broadcasted by the Imedi TV channel has not yet faded away and another one is on the verge of breaking out. This is a specific trait of the national policy, which, anyway, seems to be based upon the principle of “no day without a scandal”. The coming frenzy is concentrated around the Georgian media possessing a unique ability of taking over “someone else’s” job, that is, of making politics instead of just covering the processes. As the people have noticed a long time ago, the rumours appearing in the media have got the tendency to be confirmed in a while.

An agreement on visa regime facilitation has been reached already, and the negotiations on the association agreement are being prepared at the moment. The tricks of the Georgian players, such as the Imedi broadcast about Russia’s supposed attack, are not at all beneficial for the image of the European partners. Head of European Commission Josй Manuel Barroso called upon Prime Minister Nika Gilauri to prevent the country from any actions that could aggravate the situation.

The Mayor’s Office of Tskhinval did not allow the citizens who are not satisfied with the slow rate of the dwellings rehabilitation to hold any meetings. However, the initiators of the action are still intended to bring the people into the streets and obviously demand the resignation of President Eduard Kokoity. The authorities have already made it clear that they are not going to allow any disorder and grew suspicious of the opposition’s connections with the Georgian special services. Both parties are rather determined, so anything may be expected on March 21. GeorgiaTimes tried to figure out
