Georgian luger to be buried on Saturday

Nodar Kumaritashvili, the Georgian luger, killed in accident at the sleighing track right before the beginning of the Olympics, will be buried in Bakuriani [Georgia] on Saturday, said Georgi Chanishvili, the spokesman of department of sport and youth of Georgia - RIA Novosti.


Yesterday a funeral service for the deceased was held in Vancouver. The service took place in the Russian church of Vancouver, was attended by a small group of Georgian sportsmen [only 6 of them remaining at the Olympics].

On Monday, after the service, organizers sent the coffin with the body to the airport to be delivered to Tbilisi.

Kumaritashvili died on February 12th in result of the accident in Whistler track, several hours before the opening of the Olympic Games. While training he failed to take the final 270-degree turn at the speed of 145 km/h, was thrown out of the bobrun, hit the metal column, and died in a hospital near Whistler of injuries.

Nikoloz Rurua, the Minister of Culture, Sport and Monument Protection, said the body will be delivered to Georgia after the examination.

President Mikheil Saakashvili promised that a bobsleighing track named after Nodar Kumaritashvili will be built in Georgia.
