USA is discontent with the scandalous reportage of Imedi

2010-03-15 10:10

John Bass, the U.S. ambassador to Georgia, believes the special program of Imedi doesn't meet journalist standards. He called it "profoundly alarming and disturbing" -

Imedi [Georgian TV channel] showed a reportage on alleged invasion of Russian troops and death of President Saakashvili. It stirred a panic all around Georgia. Yet it turned out to be an "innocent" attempt to "show" the scenario of possible events in case the "Georgian society won't be consolidated against the Russian plan." On the order of President Mikheil Saakashvili, his press secretary Manjgaladze arrived in the studio and calmed down the people, saying such a turn of events can't happen in Georgia at the present-day stage.

The French side also criticized the report.

The Foreign Ministry of France condemned the initiative of Imedi, called the reportage on alleged uprising of the opposition and Russia's military operation against Georgia strange and absolutely improper. Paris expects all the participants to be responsible for that.

Foreign mass media also slam the reportage. "The Georgian opposition on Sunday denounced a mock television report of a Russian invasion as government-sponsored propaganda aimed at smearing President Mikheil Saakashvili's critics" - AFP.

"This government's treatment of its own people is outrageous. I am sure that every second of this programme was agreed with Saakashvili. Many people suffered psychological trauma," opposition leader Nino Burjanadze told AFP.

Burjanadze stated her intention to bring a claim against Imedi and Georgian authorities.

Russian Foreign Ministry hasn't already responded. President Mikheil Saakashvili called the reportage unpleasant, yet realistic.
