Saakashvili didn’t come to opposition

2008-11-07 19:03

Mikhail Saakashvili didn't come to the participants of the protest action, gathered near his residence and didn't listen to their charges and demands. Opposition didn't hope he would as, according to one of the leaders, he is too coward to face his people.

The action near the residence is over. The demands sounded near the parliament, were presented; mass media freedom, return of the Imedy company to its legal owners, discharge of political prisoners. Besides, some demanded dismissal of the President and early presidential and parliamentary elections.

Despite their radical demands, opposition leaders nourish no hope for the immediate dismissal of Saakashvili and claim, that they start a new long stage of struggle, which will be finished in spring 2009 with early presidential and parliamentary elections.

Before spring the opposition is going to care for elections background - to achieve true freedom of mass media and speech and to change the Electoral code in order to ensure free and democratic elections.

The new political struggle is coming. The main oppositional non-parliamentary forces are going to establish a new oppositional alliance, which will comprise not only political parties but oppositional social and non-governmental organizations

According to tentative data, the constitutive meeting of a new alliance will be held since in a period since December ,10th to 20th , and after it protest actions will continue until Saakashvili resigns and calls new elections. These are the plans of opposition. Today's action was finished near the Holy Trinity Cathedral, where one year ago the opposition members and their supporters hided, after the rally was dispersed.

At the same time, Mikhail Saakashvili again addressed his people from the TV screens. Accompanied by TV journalists, he visited Georgy Sherazadashvili, who suffered during the rally disperse last year.

Saakashvili didn't comment on today's protest action, but said that November, 7th taught him and his people a good lesson. First of all: to solve problems in the streets, through protest actions, is impossible. «All questions must be solved in the Parliament, in the court, through negotiations, but not through mutual insults», - Saakashvili stated.

Independent experts cannot predict the coming events. Opposition claimed that they will struggle to the end, until government meets all the demands, but the lost their zeal quickly and slowed their activities down.

After parliamentary election on May, 21st , united opposition planned to establish an alternative parliament and even found the building - the New Rights Party office, but it remained an idea.
