EU: Geneva Talks are moving on step by step

2010-05-19 15:16

According to Pierre Morel, the EU special representative, Geneva Talks on security and stability in Caucasus are going on step by step, and in the course of 11th round the previously discussed issues will be focused on - RIA Novosti.

The sides must continue moving on our main schedule, he noted. As for expectations from the negotiations, it be discussed only when everyone gathers, Morel added.

Previously Irakli Sesiashvili, the Georgian expert, said Geneva Talks reached deadlock.

"The format of Geneva Talks didn't lead to results, and it can be said this format of negotiations is made to let the West feel to certain extent it's involved in settling conflicts, - political scientist said. - In reality negotiations are not directed at real results, and therefore they are not feasible" .

Sesiashvili believes the Russian side's proposals on signing non-aggression agreements between Tbilisi, Sokhumi and Tskhinval violate interests of Georgia.

"Talk on agreement is in certain degree aimed at deranging negotiations, - Sesiashvili believes. - It's a means of exerting pressure on Georgia and on the West as well, and in that way the West has to exert pressure on us with an aim to sign a document like that."

The expert highlighted it would be better to cancel Geneva talks, as without them chance appears the West would take other steps and more effective format of negotiations would be established.
