South Ossetian administration accepted: shots were fired2008-11-25 14:54
South Ossetian administration confirmed, that on Sunday evening (November, 23rd ) warning shots (into air) near the motorcade of Georgian and Polish Presidents were fired, but disclaimed the participation of Russian servicemen in the incident, informs Lenta.ru, alluding to Kommersant.gt-en-newsitem-inside
As Irina Gagloyeva, the republican Minister of Information and Press, said after a talk with border guards, the motorcade with Mikhail Saakashvili and Lech Kaczynski inside drove to the roadblock, their bodyguards said they wanted to get to Akhalgori (it's in the territory of South Ossetia). "In sharp words they were answered that driving further is prohibited. Then one of the cars drove a few meters towards the roadblock, - Gagloyeva said. - The border guards fired a warning pattern. They didn't see the Presidents and suspected a provocation". According to her, right after the shot the limousine "made a calm turn" and drove away. "It looked like they were waiting for this shot, - Gagloyeva is sure. - I think, they expected Russian servicemen from the neighboring post to interfere, and they could have get a chance to start a new campaign against Russia ".
According to the previous data, representatives of Russian and South Ossetian administrations denied the fact of Ossetian or Russian servicemen started firing. They called it "Georgian provocation".
Let us remind, that Polish President, Lech Kaczynski, in the course of his visit to Georgia on November, 23rd , intended, together with Mikhail Saakashvili, to see a camp of refugees, suffered during the events of August, 2008. Suddenly, Kaczynski changed his decision and expressed a wish to see the territory adjacent to the South Ossetian border near Akhalgori region.
According to Kaczynski, the motorcade stopped near Russian roadblock, after that ,about 33 yards away from his car, automatic weapon shots from Russian side were heard. The President of Poland confessed that, because of darkness, he failed to realize whether the shots were directed to their side or into air. In his turn, Mikhail Saakashvili claimed that aiming firing came from Russian roadblock to presidential motorcade.
Meanwhile, Irina Gagloyeva commented upon the event and stated that the incident took place not in Russian, but in Ossetian roadblock, located not so far. "If you drive from Tbilisian side, Ossetian post will come first, and only then - the Russian one, - she explained. - The motorcade of 30 cars approached our roadblock, as it stood closer".
