Vershbow is content with Georgian army
Alexander Vershbow, the US Assistant Secretary of Defence for International Security Affairs, claimed the USA supports the course of the military reform in Georgia.
He claimed the unanimous support of reforms in the defense system and noted the progress was obvious - RosBalt.
Vershbow also pointed at the importance of contribution of the Georgian military in the peacemaking process in Afghanistan, added the cooperation of Georgia and the USA get deeper with every day, recognized and supported Georgia' s right to have the system of defense able to provide its security.
Hillary Clinton, the U.S. Secretary of State, also highlighted the role of Georgian troops in Afghanistan: "We are extremely grateful for Georgia's contributions to NATO's efforts in Afghanistan. Seven hundred and fifty Georgian soldiers in ISAF are serving shoulder-to-shoulder with U.S. Marines in Helmand Province, with another 200 serving with French troops. They are helping Afghans build a more secure, stable, and prosperous future, and working to safeguard our common security against the threat of terrorism".
At the same time the military budget of Georgia keeps shrinking - in 2011 it will amount GEL 660 mln [USD 366 mln]. Lat year GEL 774 mln [USD 430 mln] were allocated, in 2008 - GEL 868 mln [USD 482 mln].
