US’ assessment discouraged Azerbaijan’s party in power

2010-11-11 11:51

According to Deputy Executive Secretary of Azerbaijan's party in power Mubariz Gurbanly, ideas stipulated in the report by US State Department cause surprise and regret, Rosbalt reports.

According to Gurbanly, the statement made by State Department on the elections contradicts the opinions of the international observers who watched the elections process from the beginning to the end.

The day before, head of the public and political department of Azerbaijani president's administration Ali Gasanov underlined that US State Department's statement about the elections held in the republic caused "surprise and regret".

"The statement made by State Department contains prejudiced appraisals of the electoral process in Azerbaijan", - he remarked.

The day before, US Assistant Secretary of State Philip Crowley stated that the parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan went on smoothly with the participation of all the oppositional parties in the presence of observers; however, they failed to meet international standards.

Crowley also added that the pre-elections atmosphere in the republic was characterized by the absence of a balanced cover of the candidates' activities, continuous  limitations in the basic freedoms realization, such as the freedom of meetings and opinions, as well as by an imperfect process of the candidates enlisting, which in aggregate developed unequal fighting conditions for the candidates.

Finally, the US Assistant Secretary of State called upon the Azerbaijani government to concentrate upon a fair and quick consideration of all the complains related to the elections, as well as on holding accountable all the officials suspected of interfering into the electoral process.

On the whole, parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan impressed the PACE and OSCE international observers.

As was reported by head of OSCE long-term mission Wolfgang Grossruck, the voting in parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan has got a generally positive appraisal. "We noted the peaceful atmosphere of the elections compared to the previous parliamentary elections; there were no incidents", - he underlined.

On his part, head of PACE observing mission Paul Wille remarked that the elections in the republic went on peacefully, the technical equipment of the elections being at a highly professional level.
