Georgia can lose statehood without U.S. support – expert
Zurab Abashidze, the well-known Georgian expert, stated that U.S. support is the main factor of Georgia's statehood preservation.
He voiced it in the interview to Kviris Palitra [Georgian weekly], when commenting results of NATO summit in Lisbon. In his view, without support of the West, and, in the first line, the USA, it will be hard for Georgia to preserve statehood, let alone restore territorial integrity. In this regard he underlined importance of meeting of Mikheil Saakashvili and Barack Obama.
He also warned against t overrating importance of the summit's declaration, calling on Russia to cancel recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. "Proceeding from Russia's strong position in regard to the occupied territories, waiting for logical continuation of the position, held by the West in this regard, is somehow overestimated," Abashidze highlighted.
"If read resolution of NATO PA summit attentively, it presents recommendations not for Russia alone. Several advices, worthy of attention, are given to Georgia as well - I mean paragraphs about development of democracy and other issues," he said.
