Shevardnadze: Saakashvili Has Chance to Remain in Office Third Time
At this stage the President of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili has a chance to remain in office for the third time if he draws a moral from the committed mistakes. This opinion was expressed by the ex president of Georgia Edward Shevardnadze in his interview to the Georgian Times. This interview is cited by the GHN.
"I can't say that the current situation is considered normal in Georgia, said Shevardnadze. It is not normal because it is explosive and God only knows what may happen. Everything depends on people's will... If the authorities would sincerely like to meet them halfway, they should make this step".
As for the current attitude of the West to the Georgian authorities, Shevardnadze believes this is the first step to a change in the attitude to the country. "Of course, it is important what John Bass says but he does not express the opinion of the authorities and people. We should wait a bit more and observe the events. I am quite aware of the style in which the US Department of State works, and just one statement at this stage is not all-encompassing. This is just the beginning. The President and the Congress should express their opinions, too", stressed the ex leader of Georgia.
As for Saakashvili's chance to remain in power for his third period, Shevardnadze thinks that, if the authorities would like to remain at the steering-wheel, they must hold a transparent election. "He (Saakashvili) has already participated in presidential elections twice, so he may change the law and do it for the third time. This may happen", specified the ex president of the country.
