Georgia to Study Secret Archives of Vatican
Vatican opened access to the former secret archives for Georgia. According to the Georgia News, it is a question of archives where some historical documents interesting for the Georgian party are stored. It was said today by the Prime Minister of Georgia Nikoloz Gilauri at a meeting of the government. He added that a negotiation had already been held with Vatican on this topic for a long time.
"Some days ago the negotiations successfully terminated and from now on Georgian scholars have a possibility to view at least 10.000 documents as before their content was unknown. According to an assumption of some experts, these materials have serious historical value", declared Gilauri.
In his turn, the Minister of Culture of Georgia Nikoloz Rurua said that the materials on Georgia were stored in the Vatican archives starting from the 12th century, when missioners started to arrive in the country. They already had good skills in cartography that time.
"Here (in the archives of Vatican) some unique materials covering the 800-year history of our country have been accumulated", said Rurua.
By the end of June Vatican must receive a delegation of Georgian scholars to study the opened archives.
