Security Council to handle all crisis situations in Georgia
Amendments to the law "On national safety" have been adopted today at the meeting of the Georgian parliament. As was reported by Novosti Georgia, the passed amendments increased the powers of the National Security Council.
Now it will handle all the crisis situations in the country posing a threat to Georgia's national interests and safety. Besides, the Council will coordinate the fulfillment of the president's orders and acts issued in such situations.
Security Council will also have the authority to apply to the president in case of a threat to the state's interests and safety.
In the opinion of a number of local experts, Security Council has thus become a body taking top political decisions.
Security Council started working on the new concept of Georgia's national safety at the beginning of this year and at the end of last year, the parliament made amendments to the law "On defense planning". Since that time, the function of developing the document "On assessment of threats to Georgia" has been passed over by the defense administration to the National Security Council.
