The Head of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili and the Prime Minister of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan held the opening ceremony of a new customs point in Sarpi on the Georgian-Turkish border today. According to the "Georgia-News", in his speech, Saakashvili named this customs office "the most modern and best in the world crossing point".
"Cooperation between Georgia and Turkey is exemplary ... It is a bright example of cooperation between the two European countries, aimed from difficult past to a bright future ... Development of Turkey is also an example for Georgia. I'm proud that I can call Erdogan my personal friend and friend of Georgia ..." - said Saakashvili.
The Turkish Prime Minister added that the new customs point has a "great importance for both countries". "Turkey is one of the friendly countries for Georgia. Updated crossing point will facilitate the transition of trade relations in a new active phase" - said the Turkish prime minister.
An agreement on joint management of customs in Sarpi was reached in May during the visit of Georgian Prime Minister Nikoloz Gilauri to Turkey. Work on the reconstruction of the customs points lasted about seven months.
