In Sakartvelo there will be a prison of European standards build
Sakartvelo intends to build a new correctional facility that will meet the most stringent European standards. According to the "Georgia-News", this facility will be built in western Georgia, in the village Laituri of Ozurgeti district. The prison will be equipped with the European Prison Rules (EPR) and standards of the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CPT).
"The construction of this prison will help to solve the problem of overcrowding. This is the first operation of Council of Europe Development Bank in sector administrative and judicial public services" - was said in a statement of the Georgian Foreign Ministry.
For the construction Georgia will receive a credit of EUR 60 million from the Council of Europe Development Bank (CEB).
The new prison complex will be designed for 2000 inmates. "It will improve the capacity of prisons in the country in terms of quantity and quality, and prisons in Georgia will be fully consistent with the recommendations of ERR" - said the Foreign Ministry of Georgia.
