The EU has demanded price increases for meat
According to Deputy Prime Minister of Georgia Giorgi Baramidze, increase of prices for meat production in Georgia is associated with certain EU requirements. "80-percent increase of meat prices in Georgia happened due to the requirements of the EU experts, which were advanced to the Georgian Government in connection with the agreement on free trade" - the "Business-Georgia" quoted official's speech at the conference "Cooperation for a European future."
"This is a serious problem for the population as well as for authorities. I do not think it was part of the interests of the EU, but this was done because it is important for us to meet international standards. But it would be better if it was done in stages, although within a year, and it could be less painful" - said Baramidze.
He also appealed to the European experts to consider "local features" more carefully when making such decisions.
