The Minister of Defence of Estonia is ready to repeat the "feat" of Georgia of August 2008
The head of the Ministry of Defence of Estonia Mart Laar said that the army of the republic will be able to stop the Russian armed forces in the event of open conflict with Moscow.
As the "Interfax" reported, Laar recalled the events of war of August 2008 and expressed confidence that the Estonian soldiers would not appear worse than their Georgian colleagues. "If Georgia was able to cope with the fact that Russian tanks have not passed the 90-kilometer section between Tbilisi and Tskhinvali, why Estonia wouldn't handle this?" - "Interfax" quoted the words of the Minister of Defense of Estonia.
Laar is also confident that if such situation takes place in Estonia NATO and the guerrilla movement would come to the aid.
"I can confirm that the appropriate specific training and equipment of the units have already begun. I always keep the development in this area under control. Unfortunately, I can not say more" - he added.
Recall, that in August 2008 the Georgian authorities had unleashed an armed conflict against South Ossetia. Russia, speaking on the side of Tskhinval, conducted an operation to force Georgia to peace and recognized the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Later, Moscow's position was supported by Nicaragua, Venezuela and Nauru.
Official Tbilisi severed diplomatic relations with the Russian side, the two republics were called "occupied territories".
