Batumi court issued a statement on the case of the "Russian spy"
Today Batumi city court issued a statement on the case of nine "Russian spies" who were sentenced to prison terms ranging from 11 to 14 years on the eve. Earlier employees of the Russian GRU have recruited them and have systematically obtained information containing state secrets from them, "Georgia-News" quoted a statement of the court.
"The court found that defendants in an unestablished time and situation were lured by employees of the GRU of the General Staff of Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, and were on the intelligence connection with them. On the instructions of GRU agents they have been procuring and collecting information containing state secrets and another kind of information, and have regularly passing information which is considered a state secret on the law "On State Secrets" by unknown channels" - said the court.
Six of nine defendants were convicted under Article 314 of the Criminal Code of Georgia - espionage.
November last year Georgian Interior Ministry reported that during an operation called "Enver" there were identified dozens of people, collaborating with the secret services of Russia. As a result of four-year investigation the Georgian law enforcement officials have detained 15 people. Two were released after the conclusion of a procedural deal, and 13 people were placed in pretrial detention. Later, nine cases were sorted out from the general case.
Earlier procedural deals were concluded with two of them and they received a suspended sentence. Procedural deal can be concluded with the accused, if a person acknowledges his guilt and agrees to cooperate with the investigation.
Information about the two prisoners on the case is still unknown.
